Just finished Charles Burns' "Black Hole" this morning, and was just blown away by how great this boook is. Essentially, the story details the lives of teenagers living in Seattle in the mid-70's and perfectly captures the angst of being an adolsescent: the sexual explorations, the wild emotional rides, the drug explorations, and the ups and downs of living in the world of high school. Yes, sounds very "Dazed and Confused", doesn't it? Except that Burns throws in the little twist of the presence of a transmittable disease among the kids that turns the carrier into a mutated monster. The teens know this is part of their social world, and accept it. Burns does nothing to explain the presence of this virus, but rather explores the lives of those it affects. Really superb writing here, and Burns is a compelling artist whose imagery and use of the comic medium is unparalleled in its creativity and originality. I have included some panels to illustrate his artistic genius. Enjoy....
