Robert Pollard - Music For "Bubble" EP (2005)

Robert Pollard continues his 2005, after Guided by Voices final tour with yet another modest EP, this time as music for Steven Soderbergh’s film “Bubble”.  In my opinion, this is an EP that is not essential for Pollard fanatics, although “All Men Are Freezing” would foreshadow Pollard’s songwriting on “From a Compound Eye” and “Coast to Coast Carpet of Love” – it’s gently rolling chord changes and singing make it sound like outtakes from those records.  “Boring About” and “Search-light Pickups” are two gentle prog-inspired acoustic instrumentals.  “747 Ego” is not as amazing at the title.  It is a plodding rocker that isn’t very inspiring and unfortunately it’s repeated twice on this short EP.  “I’m No Child” has a wonderfully strange melody placed into a bed of acoustic guitars, and is the clear winner here.  In my opinion, this is an inconsequential release, even though it’s attached to a Soderbergh film.  “I’m No Child” is the real keeper here, so seek out that song for your Pollard mix tapes.
